The FIBA Regional Offices in Asia and Oceania made history by having a first-time joint event.
KUALA LUMPUR (Malesia) – A dynamic four-day FRIP (FIBA Referee Instructor Programme) workshop in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, designed to develop the next generation of referee instructors across Asia and Oceania. This intensive program brought together aspiring instructors, equipping them with the tools and knowledge to elevate officiating standards in their respective countries.
The workshop was carefully planned with a varied approach. The first two days focused on the principles of teaching and learning, providing participants with effective instructional techniques. Day three shifted the focus to basketball knowledge, offering a unique perspective through a court session led by Coach Arnika Patil from India.
"It's crucial for everyone involved in the game to understand the different roles on the court," explained Patil. "From how coaches manage game tempo to the details of player positioning, FRIP creates a space for this shared understanding."
The final day delved into the core of refereeing knowledge. Albert Joseph from FIBA and Roberto Chiari from Italy guided participants through practical training sessions, focusing on effective teaching methods for referees. Both instructors were impressed by the group's enthusiasm. "The participants were incredibly active and motivated, making our sessions highly productive," they remarked.
Kok Eng Meo from Singapore shared his positive experience: "I gained not only valuable refereeing knowledge but, more importantly, insights on how to effectively teach and mentor local referees in my country. The basketball knowledge shared by a professional coach was equally impactful, deepening my understanding of the game which will enable us to officiate more holistically."
Arisawa Shigeyuki from Japan reflected on his experience: "I was truly impressed by how important it is to make learning interactive and engaging. It was very valuable to work with the other participants and learn from experienced instructors. I want to thank FIBA for this programme and my classmates for their professional support and friendship."
Glenn Cornelio from the Philippines expressed his eagerness to apply his newfound knowledge. "I'm excited to return home and begin working with referees in my region," he shared. "The skills I've acquired here will undoubtedly benefit other areas of my life as well."
FIBA Head of Refereeing, Carl Jungebrand, delivered inspiring closing remarks, leaving the participants with a powerful message as they embarked on their new roles. "This is not the end, but rather the beginning of your journey as instructors," he stated. "The knowledge and skills you've gained here are the foundation upon which you will build your expertise and contribute to the growth of basketball officiating in your countries. Remember that teaching is a continuous process of learning and development, and I encourage you to embrace every opportunity to refine your techniques and share your passion for the game." He continued, "I wish you all great success in shaping the future of basketball officiating, and I have no doubt that you will make a positive impact on the court and beyond."
