MIES (Switzerland) –In the latest Monday Special webinar, hosted by Greydy Diaz, FIBA Referee Instructor Mike Thomson breaks down the concept to identify Unsportsmanlike Fouls (UF). This session focuses on mastering basics, using Individual Officiating Techniques (IOT) to ensure precision during high-pressure plays.
A Proactive Approach to the UF
The session delivers deep technical insights into the 0-1-2 Technique, moving from observing the play to a confident Unsportsmanlike Foul. Thomson tackles the "grey area" of intent, teaching referees to use "Power Words" to categorize criteria. By applying a "1 to 10" intensity scale, referees learn to process plays, ensuring only obvious, "1000% certain" fouls are upgraded to a UF.
Elevating Your Game Preparation
This webinar is a must-watch for referees (but also other game participants) looking to master complex defensive stops and transition breaks. It provides a roadmap for identifying excessive contact and distinguishing basketball moves from acts of violence. Mastering these transitions leads to better game control, sharper decision-making, and total consistency in the system.
