Istanbul Calling: A Referee's Day
Diary of Decisions and Dunks at FIBA U17 Men’s World Cup (Istanbul, Türkiye)

ISTANBUL (Turkiye) – FIBA U17 Men's Basketball World Cup in Istanbul is a high-energy showcase of young talented players from around the globe. Through the lens of Sun Jian, a FIBA referee at the tournament from China, we gain a unique perspective on the dedication and teamwork required to officiate at this top level.

"Our day begins with a nutritious breakfast to fuel our bodies, followed by a quick session at the fitness gym to ensure we are in peak physical condition. After a short relaxation and a light lunch, depending on the start of the game, we hit the sports hall by a shuttle bus. We need to be there 90 minutes before tip-off, as the intensity ramps up in this final stretch before the game.

We initiate a pre-game conference with all the officials, including Table Officials and the Technical Delegate, this meeting takes place 75 minutes before the game. This collaborative effort ensures everyone is aligned on the rules and guidelines for the upcoming match. Then within the referee crew, we carefully analyse scouting reports, thoroughly reviewing each team's playing style, tendencies, and key players. We go over strategies, anticipate potential challenges, and discuss how to handle various scenarios that may arise on the court.

Following this comprehensive briefing, our refereeing crew steps onto the court 25 minutes before tip-off, ready to uphold the integrity of the game and ensure a fair and enjoyable experience for players and fans alike.

The fast-paced nature of the tournament means there's little time for breaks. After the final buzzer, the work continues with a debriefing session where we review video clips, analyse key plays, and deliver a feedback session led by the Referee Instructors. This process of continuous improvement is essential to our growth as referees."

Through Sun Jian's eyes, we see the dedication and professionalism of the referees at the FIBA U17 Men’s Basketball World Cup. It's a demanding job that requires a deep understanding of the game, quick decision-making skills, and the ability to work seamlessly as a team.

So next time you're enjoying a game, give a nod to the referees working hard to keep the action fair and exciting.
