The FIBA Referee Operations has just released a new manual, "Improve Your Timing of the Whistle," designed to help referees elevate their game. The guide's core message is that the "whole story matters". Instead of making a quick, "snapshot" decision based on a single moment, referees are encouraged to "process the play" from start to finish. This means watching how the action begins, develops, and concludes before making a decision. This approach leads to higher-quality calls and keeps the game flowing smoothly by avoiding unnecessary whistles on minor contacts.
To help referees master these concepts, the manual is accompanied by three videos that break down different types of whistle timing: patient, cadence, and immediate. Additionally, there will be six "Tips and Tricks" videos to provide practical advice and further help referees train their eyes to see the entire play and how to make the perfect timing to your call.
The document is now available on the iREF Library App.
