First referee camp in South Asia aims to empower female game officials
Groundbreaking initiative towards empowering female game officials in South Asia.

The FIBA Regional Office Asia and the South Asia Basketball Association (SABA), in collaboration with the Maldives Basketball Association, successfully held a Female Referee Development Camp in Malé, Maldives, from 2 to 6 November 2024.

This initiative reflects FIBA Regional Office Asia and SABA's commitment to building professional skills in the South Asia Sub-Zone, with a focus on advancing and accrediting female referees across the region.

The intensive program brought together 11 promising female referees from India, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives, nominated by their national federations. These participants underwent rigorous training and hands-on practice sessions, honing their technical officiating skills, game management, and staying up-to-date with the latest basketball officiating regulations.

Throughout the week, the referees engaged in both classroom instruction and real-time officiating exercises. Their dedication and enthusiasm highlighted their commitment to achieving accreditation in the upcoming cycle—a significant step toward strengthening the presence and professionalism of female referees in South Asia.

"I would like to express my gratitude to FIBA Regional Office Asia for its support in promoting female referees in the region," said Ahmed Adam, President of the South Asia Basketball Association (SABA) and Maldives Basketball Association (MBA). "I also extend my thanks to all the participants for their dedication to the program. I am confident that we will soon see more female referees playing an active role in the game across this region."

Reflecting on the experience, one participant from Sri Lanka, Sandali Malsha, shared, “This camp has been an invaluable experience for me. Not only did I learn new skills, but I also gained confidence and motivation to excel as a referee. I feel ready to take on new challenges and proudly represent female referees.”

Queenty Mary Nongrum from India echoed this sentiment, adding, “The camp has not only equipped me with technical skills but also connected me with a network of inspiring women from across South Asia. I am more motivated than ever to pursue my career as a referee and make an impact in the sport.”

This initiative is part of FIBA Regional Office Asia's commitment to developing various aspects of the sport, including game officials, who are undeniably a key factor in the quality of basketball games.
