FIBA Referees Global Fitness Team to Align Standards

FIBA Referees Global Fitness Team convenes to standardize protocols and advance world-class physical preparation for Elite Programme referees and analyse the methods to expand the programs worldwide in all FIBA referees’ levels.

MIES (Switzerland) - The FIBA Referees Global Fitness Team Workshop is scheduled for 15-17 December 2025, an event designed to elevate physical preparation standards for FIBA referees worldwide. This intensive three-day session aims to update the Global Fitness Team on the latest evidence-based training methods, refine global assessment protocols, and strengthen the monitoring system for referee physical performance. Key discussions will focus on topics such as load management, specific speed and agility profiling, effective injury-prevention and recovery strategies, and the integration of new technology into referees’ fitness programs.

The workshop's agenda is focused on actionable outcomes, including reviewing current referee performance data and establishing common, consistent protocols for fitness assessments across all competitions and levels. Participants will coordinate the execution of both online and on-site assessments and develop the comprehensive annual fitness-support strategy for all FIBA regions in 2026. The overall goal is to ensure consistency, excellence, and continuous improvement in referee physical performance, ensuring FIBA's referees are optimally prepared for the demanding pace of international basketball.

FIBA Referee physical performance supporting program already has a 20-year history, and it has been led by Mr Alejandro Vaquera, Senior Professor of the Sports Science Faculty at the University of Leon, who has been leading this expert project all the time. At this point, FIBA has 4 FIBA Referee Fitness Coordinators around the world, and the aim is to expand the team also to Africa and Asia.
