FIBA publishes a new handbook for referees – Improve Your... Rotations

FIBA has released a new handbook titled “Improve Your… Rotations” to help basketball referees enhance their positioning and decision-making with proper crew rotations that keep officials on the ball side for better angles and accuracy.

MIES (Switzerland) — Basketball is evolving - faster, more dynamic, and more complex than ever before. As actions spread across the court, referees must adapt to maintain optimal positioning and decision-making clarity. FIBA has released a new interactive handbook, "Improve Your... Rotations," providing the blueprint for executing crew movements with professional-grade consistency.

What’s Inside?

The handbook details how proper rotations keep both the Lead and Trail positioned on the ball side ("refereeing strong side"). Keeping multiple pairs of eyes on the ball side provides better angles on on-ball play, which increases decision accuracy and improves the quality of no-calls. Referees will read about the Rotation Phases and the exact decision-making checklist.
