MIES (Switzerland) - As of October 1, 2024, a new edition of the FIBA Official Basketball Rules will come into effect worldwide and these are now available to download.

The main changes incorporated in the updated FIBA Official Basketball Rules 2024 include the following:

Art. 17 Throw-in: New throw-in lines on table side for the throw-in, when ball is advanced to the front court after the time-out during the last 2:00 minutes in the fourth quarter.

Art. 44 Correctable Error: Expansion of the time frame to correct an error. The text now provides greater clarity regarding WHAT, WHEN and HOW  errors are to be corrected in a logical manner

Appendix F - Instant Replay System & HCC: Changes to align the rule with the amended Correctable Error rule and new language to clarify when coaches have a possibility to withdraw (cancel) a challenge request (HCC).

Official Interpretations - Foul and Fake: The new interpretation is intended to protect the fairness and image of the game by eliminating the situations where a faking to be fouled warning is not accessed.

FIBA's Rules Advisory Group is made up of refereeing experts, along with representatives of the World Association of Basketball Coaches and the FIBA Players' and Competitions Commission. FIBA's Rules Advisory Group studies all proposals for rule changes before submitting them to the FIBA Technical Commission for a final review.

During this process, the FIBA's Rules Advisory Group also has regular exchanges with NBA and NCAA experts. After the FIBA Technical Commission's review, it is the FIBA Central Board who approves any changes to the FIBA Official Basketball Rules.
