MIES (Switzerland) - The FIBA Referee Instructor Programme (FRIP) initiative aims to develop a new generation of instructors who will help improve referee performance across the continent by focusing on three key areas: Teaching & Learning, Basketball and Refereeing Knowledge. The program features 24 candidates from 18 countries all across Europe.
 

Phase 1: Foundations

The first phase of the program is a three-week online module focused on building a solid foundation. Candidates are currently immersed in the Official Basketball Rules (OBR) and their Interpretations (OBRI). This is followed by a deep dive into crucial technical skills, including Individual Officiating Techniques (IOT), 3-Person Officiating (3PO), and essential Basketball Terminology. At the end of this phase, all participants must successfully pass an online exam to proceed.
 

Phase 2: In-Depth Home-Study

Following the initial three weeks, candidates will enter a six-week Home-Study phase. During this time, they'll build on the foundational knowledge from Phase 1, exploring the three core elements— Teaching & Learning, Basketball and Refereeing Knowledge — in greater detail. Each element includes its own assessment to ensure participants are successfully mastering the material.
 

The Final Workshop in Thessaloniki

Successful completion of the Home-Study phase will prepare participants for the peak of the program: a four-day intensive workshop in Thessaloniki, Greece, in January 2026. This face-to-face workshop will serve as the final assessment and crowning moment for all their hard work, officially preparing them to become FRIP-qualified referee instructors.
