THESSALONIKI (Greece) - A group of 24 aspiring referee instructors from across Europe have gathered in Thessaloniki for a demanding 4-day workshop as part of the FIBA Referee Instructor Programme (FRIP).
This face-to-face session, which began on Thursday, marks the end of months of dedicated pre-study and home-study covering essential topics such as basketball knowledge, refereeing techniques, and teaching methodologies.
The workshop kicked off with an engaging two days focused on teaching and learning, led by expert Simon Kirkland from the UK. Participants explored effective instructional techniques, building upon their prior knowledge. Head of Refereeing Carl Jungebrand and Referee Manager of FIBA Regional Office Europe Davorin Nakic officially opened the workshop, emphasizing the importance of developing skilled instructors to elevate the quality of officiating across the region.
Denys Povorozniuk from Ukraine shared his enthusiasm for the program, highlighting the value of group work, presentations, and interactive discussions. He emphasized key takeaways such as keeping instructions simple, utilizing effective delivery tools, and promoting positive learning environments.
Ventsislav Velikov from Bulgaria also expressed his appreciation for the program, noting the importance of icebreakers and creating a positive and engaging atmosphere for learning. He plans to implement these techniques in his own teaching, emphasizing active learner involvement and clear communication.
The FRIP workshop underscores FIBA's commitment to investing in the development of its referee instructors, ensuring that the highest standards of officiating are maintained across Global basketball.
