FIBA Referees Gear Up for Summer Season
The pre-competition programme (PCP) kicks off for the Elite Programme referees, who will officiate the main competitions this summer.

MIES (Switzerland) - FIBA has started the pre-competition programme (PCP) for the referees, who will officiate the summer's basketball main competitions. In a recent webinar held on 15th April, Carl Jungebrand, FIBA Head of Refereeing, presented the schedule for the upcoming events and the extensive activities planned for the referees in the months ahead.

Jungebrand laid out a detailed program encompassing self-study modules to sharpen their understanding of the rules and interpretations, collaborative group analysis sessions to refine their decision-making through shared insights, and an appropriate physical preparation plan. The PCP is distributed for three different divisions technical, physical and mental preparation, led by the experts.

The Referee Instructors signed for each Competition oversee the technical preparation of the referees with video works.

FIBA Referees Fitness Coordinator Alejandro Vaquera, overseeing the physical conditioning of the referees, presented the key targets and the detailed physical training program. This will be crucial in guaranteeing the referees possess the endurance and agility needed to keep up with the fast-paced action of elite games.

Furthermore, Sports Psychologist Dubravka Martinovic, in charge of their mental readiness, detailed the activities designed to equip the referees with the mental strength to manage the demands of top-level competitions. These sessions will concentrate on areas such as focus, resilience, effective communication and decision-making under pressure based on protocols.

Concluding the session, Carl Jungebrand stressed the significance of the approaching period. "It will be a busy and active period," he said, "but we need to arrive at the competitions in our best shape, with our preparation both physically and mentally." This comprehensive approach highlights FIBA's dedication to ensuring the highest standard of refereeing in its summer tournaments.  This is the best way to respect and serve the game of basketball.”
